What Are the Motorway Toll Rates for Cars with Trailers?

Bulky luggage, motorbikes, boats, or heavy loads—there are many reasons you might need to attach a trailer to your car. But is the motorway toll the same for cars with and without trailers? Which category does a car towing a trailer fall into? What speed limits apply when driving with a trailer on the motorway?

Can You Drive on the Motorway with a Trailer?

All vehicles can use the motorway, whether light vehicles or heavy goods vehicles. The difference lies in the toll rates, which vary according to vehicle category. 
Light vehicles are grouped under category 1. This includes vehicles with a height of 2 metres or less and a maximum authorised mass (MAM) not exceeding 3.5 tonnes, such as:

• Standard cars;

• Small vans;

• 4x4s and MPVs;

• Cars with trailers.

The vehicle height includes the trailer (excluding the load). To remain in category 1, the total height must not exceed 2 metres, and the MAM must also comply with category 1 limits. If your car tows a trailer with a height between 2 and 3 metres, the combination falls into category 2.

Is the Motorway More Expensive with a Trailer?

The motorway toll for a car with a trailer is not necessarily higher than for a car without one. It all depends on your vehicle’s category. If your vehicle falls into category 2, the toll will be higher than for a category 1 vehicle.

What Are the Motorway Toll Rates for Cars with Trailers?

The cost of the motorway toll for a car with a trailer varies according to your vehicle’s category and your chosen route. For example, a Paris to Bordeaux journey costs €57.20* for a category 1 vehicle towing a trailer with a height (excluding the load) not exceeding 2 metres. 
The toll rises to €87.90* for a category 2 vehicle, including light vehicles towing a trailer over 2 metres in height. You can calculate your route and check the toll price in advance on the SANEF website.

How Do You Pass through the Toll?

There are several ways to pass through the toll with a car and trailer:

• Use the 30 km/h express lane for electronic tolls if your vehicle is category 1;

• Use a standard lane with a stop if you are driving a category 2 vehicle, even if you have an electronic toll subscription;

• Use electronic toll lanes open to all vehicle categories, with the appropriate rate applied for your car and trailer.

What is the Speed Limit on the Motorway with a Trailer?

Vehicles towing a trailer are subject to speed limits, depending on the type of road. On the motorway, the maximum permitted speed is 90 km/h (compared to 130 km/h for cars without trailers).
