Just like in France, Italy has developed a highly extensive motorway network to make travel across the country easier. Service areas are essential facilities provided by the companies managing these fast routes. The main purpose of a service or rest area is to encourage drivers to take breaks, helping to improve road safety. In 2020, there were over 200 service and rest areas listed on Italian motorways (autostrada). These areas offer a range of facilities (toilets, picnic areas, electric vehicle charging points, etc.). Please note that the range of services depends on the type and location of the area. What’s the difference between a service area and a rest area? What facilities are available? Bip&Go, a leading player in European mobility, explains more.
If you’re planning to drive to Italy, you’ll soon notice that the motorway network is extremely well designed. Of the 6,700 km of motorways, 85% are privately managed. The main routes connecting the country’s major cities are mostly operated by Autostrade per l’Italia.
The major motorways include:
Did you know? A rest area is not the same as a service area. Service areas offer a much wider range of amenities. These typically include a restaurant or several fast-food chains, a fuel station, a shop, and sometimes even a hotel. Rest areas provide more basic facilities (toilets, picnic areas, parking). However, not all areas are equipped with electric charging points for vehicles.
As mentioned earlier, rest areas do not offer the full range of facilities found at service areas. They provide essential services for drivers to rest: access to toilets, children’s play areas, and picnic tables. These areas are designed to give motorists a place to pause and reduce fatigue on the road. Drowsiness is one of the leading causes of accidents in Europe, so rest areas have been installed every 20 to 30 km to encourage regular breaks.
Service areas offer much more than rest areas. They usually feature one or more restaurants, a fuel station, a shop, and often hotels and large children’s play areas. For added comfort, you’ll often find extra services such as showers, breakdown assistance, and shops showcasing local products. These areas help boost the local economy by creating jobs and promoting regional specialities.
Overnight parking at Italian motorway areas is generally permitted. However, some restrictions may apply depending on the area (dedicated zones, 24-hour parking limits, etc.). There are specific areas with secure parking and dedicated rest zones for HGVs, often with access to shower facilities.
For everyone’s safety, always park in designated areas and follow the posted guidelines. Avoid stopping on the hard shoulder. It’s also advisable to lock your vehicle and keep valuables out of sight. Some areas are equipped with CCTV for added security, but it’s important to remain vigilant.
The best option is to stop at a service area with a hotel. These are usually located on main routes (or near airports). Use your Bip&Go app to check the available facilities at each area.
Unlike some other European countries, Italy does not use a vignette system for motorway payments. The simplest way to travel is via electronic toll payment. As a Telepass partner, your Bip&Go badge works across borders, letting you pay Italian motorway tolls without stopping. Your badge is automatically detected at toll barriers. Please note, the price depends on distance travelled, vehicle category, and the type of motorway (with or without tunnels). Your badge also gives you access to nearly 500 partner car parks across Europe. With the Bip&Go mobile app, you can select your preferred countries, easily manage your journeys, and track your expenses.

HGV drivers can access dedicated rest zones, showers and toilets, hotels, and restaurants, depending on the service area selected.
No, not all service areas have electric charging points. Use your Bip&Go app to locate the nearest charging station.
It’s recommended to park in designated areas and avoid leaving your belongings visible.
